One of the things we love most about life on Star Lake is that nature is never far away.
Every week, guests share stories of wildlife encounters that become some of their favorite vacation memories. Whether it's spotting a bald eagle overhead, hearing a loon call at sunset, or watching a tiny turtle hatchling make its way to the water, there is always something happening in the Northwoods.
Both painted turtles and snapping turtles have been busy nesting around the resort. Female turtles often travel surprising distances from the water to find the perfect sunny, sandy location to lay their eggs. Painted turtles typically lay between 4 and 15 eggs, while snapping turtles can lay anywhere from 20 to 40 eggs in a single nest.
Now we're beginning to see some of those hatchlings emerge. No bigger than a silver dollar, these tiny turtles instinctively make their way toward the water, beginning a journey that has played out on Minnesota lakeshores for thousands of years.
Bald eagles are frequent visitors, often soaring above the lake in search of fish. Just a few days ago, guests witnessed something many lifelong lake residents never see, a gathering of nine loons swimming together near their dock. While loons are often seen in pairs, larger groups occasionally gather during the summer, creating a memorable sight for anyone lucky enough to witness it.
Our resident swan family has also become a guest favorite. Two proud parents are currently raising three fluffy cygnets, and guests regularly spot them gliding through the calm waters of the lake.
One of the most entertaining wildlife attractions this season has been the beaver family living on Little Beaver Lake near Cabin 10.
Early risers enjoying coffee on the porch are often treated to the unmistakable smack of a beaver tail slapping the water. This loud splash isn't random, it's actually a warning signal used to alert their family members to potential danger.
Beavers are remarkable animals. They can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes, live in close-knit family groups, and work together to maintain their lodges and habitat. Watching parents and young beavers swim together at dusk is beautiful.
Deer regularly wander through the resort, including one particularly adorable fawn that has become something of a local celebrity. Guests have also spotted frogs, turtles, songbirds, and countless other creatures throughout the property and along the trails.
Another unexpected wildlife favorite this summer has been our resident porcupines.
Two porcupines have taken up residence in the woods along our Bobber Trail, a family-friendly hiking trail where kids search for 20 hidden fishing bobbers tucked throughout the forest. Guests often hear the pair softly "cooing" back and forth to one another from the trees before they ever spot them.
Porcupines are excellent climbers and spend much of their lives in trees, feeding on leaves, twigs, buds, and bark. They are North America's second-largest rodent, behind only the beaver, and can have more than 30,000 quills covering their bodies. Despite their prickly appearance, porcupines are gentle animals that prefer avoiding conflict whenever possible.
One of our favorite wildlife stories this season came from a young guest who spotted one of the porcupines high in a tree along the trail. Excitedly, she announced that she had found a sloth! While Minnesota isn't quite home to wild sloths, the large porcupine lounging comfortably in the branches certainly looked the part from a distance. The discovery quickly became one of the highlights of her vacation.
It's moments like these that make wildlife watching at Pine Terrace so special. You never know what you'll discover around the next bend in the trail.
The wildlife here isn't tucked away in a distant wilderness. It's woven into everyday life. Kids learn about turtles while they hatch, families gather to watch loons swim by, and all ages find passion for the outdoors just by spending time in it.
It's a reminder to slow down, look around, and appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.
We never know what wildlife encounter tomorrow will bring—and that's part of the adventure.
